Thousands of women are using Natural Cycles every day and we love getting to know them and hearing their inspiring Cycler Story. This time around we had a chat with Constanza from Chile, she talks about how Natural Cycles goes further than just contraception.
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
My name is Constanza, I am 30 years old am from Chile and work as a veterinary surgeon. Although you might picture me surrounded by cats and dogs, my passion has always been around wildlife conservation. Throughout my life, I have always been in search of opportunities to get experience in that area. Those opportunities have led to me to experience adventures in different parts of the world.
I have volunteered in places like the Ecuadorian Amazon, Kenya, Brazil, and even searched for owls in the amazing redwood forest in northern California. Currently, I am doing my Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge and my research is focused on fur seals, their microbiome, and their genetic background. My project requires me to do fieldwork in a remote location in the middle of the Pacific for some poo hunting… yes, you did read that right, I work with fur seal feces and you know what? I love every single aspect of my work. As a woman coming from a conservative developing country where the female role is still family driven it has been a long way to finally enter the world of science, especially in an area like mine that involves going out to do fieldwork on my own. Being able to do this makes me feel absolutely empowered and capable of doing anything I want, regardless of my gender.
I consider myself to be a very active outdoorsy person who loves challenges, I enjoy pretty much every outdoor sport, hiking, mountaineering, diving, surfing, mountain biking and currently I am super engaged in traditional climbing. Since I was a little girl I have always wanted to do all these “boyish” things and as I grew up knowing that I was seen as a cute little girl, I really got obsessed with making myself look as tough as I could. I would rarely ask for help with anything because I wanted people to see me as a capable strong person. I think at some point I also got the wrong impression that being a girly girl equals weakness. It was not until my mid 20’s that I understood I could be a fearless person without having to act like a man. Now I look for feces, do experiments in the lab, go away for climbing weekends, get a bunch of scratches and bruises, smell like fur seal poo – and still feel feminine.
How long have you been using Natural Cycles for?
I started using Natural Cycles in March 2017. I used the pill for about 10 years. In 2014, I decided to take a break from it and then I didn’t have my period for at least 6 months. That was critical in my decision of never taking the pill again.
In my search for alternatives, I just couldn’t find any method that I would feel comfortable with, until this year, when I decided to try Natural Cycles. To be honest, at the beginning I was a bit skeptical and afraid, I have worked so hard to get my Ph.D. position that I could not risk getting pregnant. But as I started to get to know the app and developed the habit of measuring my temperature every day, I could see why it was so effective. I love that it is natural, respects and empowers my femininity and I don’t have to adapt to the method, the method adapts to my own individuality. Natural Cycles is more than just a contraceptive method, it is like an x-ray of yourself. I also love the team behind Natural Cycles, on the few occasions where I had a couple of question – I received a very quick and clear explanation. It makes me feel part of a community and that I have an entire team behind me. I don’t feel like just another customer. I also like the newsletters they send out about different common female problems.
Would you recommend Natural Cycles to other women, and why?
Would I recommend Natural Cycles? No doubt about it. We are in an era where feminism has become a trending topic but how many women actually understand what involves being a woman? Our cycles have a direct influence on our daily life and each woman is different. These differences are detected by the algorithm which will adapt to you with every data point you enter. It is basically a custom-made product. On the other hand, I do want to point out that taking your temperature and adding other data as accurate as you can, together with taking care during the red days shown by the app, is the key to the app’s success. So I would not recommend this method to somebody who cannot commit to data recording or that is unable to take extra measures for those highly fertile days.
