Meet the team: Dani, Community Manager

Every month we introduce one of the Natural Cycles team members so you can get to know what happens behind the scenes, this time round Dani our Community Manager is up. She takes care of all of our lovely Cyclers.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Serbia.

Tell us about your work at Natural Cycles?

As a Head of Community, I find that our Cyclers are the most important. In the end, everything we do is for the women using the app. So whether it’s communicating a new feature, how the menstrual cycle works or hearing Cycler stories, my job revolves a lot around making the Cycler experience the very best.

Why Natural Cycles?

I’m proud to say that I’m the #1 employee at Natural Cycles. After graduating at Hyper Island, I was eager to get started and ‘change the world’ (as one of the slogans for HI is). After hearing the story about Natural Cycles from Raoul,  I felt like this will change the world for sure, and I want to be a part of it. And here we are now almost 3 years later.

Favorite project at NC?

I still find the very first projects at NC my favorite – like #CyclerOfTheDay (LINK) or “Meet a Cycler” (LINK) blog post series. Basically all things that include Cycler stories are usually my favorite.

What does it mean to be a good Community Manager?

I believe it means a lot of different things, and for me if I have to choose two important things, it’s to be empathetic, and to truly love the product.  Without these two, I think it my work would be impossible.

What’s one thing you’ve learned during your time at Natural Cycles?

Done is better than perfect 😉

What’s your go-to place to eat in Stockholm?

I have a few: Urban Deli, Meal Prep, and Nostimo.

Favourite feature in the Natural Cycles app?

The graph definitely, and of course green days.

Favourite song?

Lana del Ray – ultraviolence.

Tell us about your hobbies?

Photography and cooking delicious LCHF meals.

Meet the team: Raoul, CEO & Co-founder

Raoul is the CEO and Co-founder of Natural Cycles, along with his wife – Elina. They have been the foundation of the company from the get go. So here’s a little intro and he has to say about what it’s like to run a startup that is disrupting the contraceptive market.

Where are you from?

Born and raised in the beautiful city of Vienna in Austria.

Tell us about your work at Natural Cycles?

I am the Co-founder and CEO of Natural Cycles, so I have been and am still involved in practically every part of the company. Whether it’s hiring new team members, managing them, speaking to regulators, doing research or developing our strategy – I like that I get to work with so many amazing people on a wide range of different topics. It’s challenging and exciting all at once.

Why Natural Cycles?

My wife and I were looking for an alternative contraceptive ourselves and once we realised we are not the only ones we decided to get started with Natural Cycles. That was around 4 years ago now and so much as changed since then – which is great. Contraception is one of the world’s biggest challenges – it’s important to increase choice, access and education around the topic. I believe it will make the world a better place.

Any favourite project?

It’s a privilege to work on something that makes a difference. I try to work with customer support on a regular basis – it’s incredibly rewarding to help our Cyclers. It really makes you realise what kind of an impact it has on their lives and we love to help them out as much as we can. Having amazing customer support is one of our core values here at the company. We have also a few exciting projects in our pipeline, but I won’t talk about that now;)

What does it mean to be a good CEO?

Ultimately, the best team wins. That goes for everything, so I think the most important part of my job is to surround myself with people who share our vision and want to make it a reality. The road to success is rough, very rough, especially if you go up against very big & smart competitors, so I also think it’s important to keep everyone motivated along the way by reminding them of what we are working towards.

What’s one thing you’ve learned in your time at Natural Cycles?

Hard work always pays off. A few passionate people can make a big difference in the world.

What’s your go-to place to eat in Stockholm?

I love Giro – a Pizzeria close to our office that makes excellent Pizza and always has available tables.

Favourite feature in Natural Cycles app?

Green days! No doubt.

Favourite song

I am a little bit weird when it comes to music – I like any sort of music as long as it reaches some level of mainstream – whether it’s Mozart or Rihanna. Currently, a source of motivation is Enrique Iglesias – I don’t really know why. 🙂

Meet the team: Olivia – Content & Translation Manager

Every month we introduce one of the Natural Cycles team members so you can get to know what happens behind the scenes, this time round Olivia is up.

Where are you from?

Well, I’m half Austrian and half Irish. I was born in Austria and grew up there until I was 10, we then moved to Ireland for 8 years and once I graduated from school I went back to Vienna to study.

Tell us about your work at Natural Cycles?

I’m the Content and Translation Manager here at Natural Cycles. As a native English speaker I am responsible for writing and communicating every written word in English, proof reading as well as managing the translations into other languages. The great thing is that I’m involved with pretty much every area of the company – from product, to marketing, to the webshop and more.

Why Natural Cycles?

I actually became interested in the company when I was looking for an alternative option for myself, only to find that they are extremely limited. Having studied Entrepreneurship and Innovation, as well as having worked for several startups – I thought there must be a startup out there aiming to solve this need so many women have. Natural Cycles was clearly the frontrunner in Europe, so I decided to write my Thesis at Uni on the company. Now, more than one year later, I’m sitting here as an employee at the headquarters in Stockholm – it’s crazy really when I come to think of it.

Favorite project at NC?

Working on the new website – so much to do, so much to learn and I love seeing a finished end result infront of me knowing that I contributed to it.

What does it mean to be a good content and translation manager?

Hm… I’m still learning new things everyday but the things to watch out for I would say would be to first of all love writing and texting. It’s a lot of that, and when it comes down to it you often have to delete half the stuff you’ve written or more, only to start from scratch. When texting for an app you always have to keep in mind that people don’t like to read much and buttons and screens are small – so getting all the important info into short text is super important. I’m humbled to have such a huge responsibility of communicating to the outside world on behalf of Natural Cycles, with such a sensitive topic. I’m always careful to use concise language to ensure it can’t be interpreted in the wrong way, but reading it shouldn’t be a bore either. Last but not least – empathy. I think it helps a lot when you can actually put yourself into the reader’s shoes. My position also requires a lot of work around organisation, communication with others on the team and creativity to ensure we are on track with keeping users updated and coming up with interesting stuff for the to read.

What’s one thing you’ve learned during your time at Natural Cycles?

I only joined three months ago and have already learned so much – from marketing tools to the way I text and keep myself organised. I couldn’t really put it down to one thing.

What’s your go-to place to eat in Stockholm?

I’m a Stockholm newbie actually so I’m no expert to ask – but I have enjoyed going to K25 to grab an informal, hangout meal. It’s like a fancier version of a food court – there’s lots of yummy options, the vibes are cool and it’s awesome for people watching haha.

Favourite feature in the Natural Cycles app?

The monthly overview, it always lets me know when green days, red days or my period is coming up all at one glance. I’m always prepared for what’s to come and I can even take it into consideration when planning holidays etc.

Favourite song?

Right now one of my faves is ‘Like real people do’ by Hozier, an amazing Irish artist, the whole album is great.

Favourite quote?

“The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.”

  • Anna Quindlen.

Tell us about your hobbies?

Blogging used to be a hobby of mine, I still do on rare occasions, but see it more as my work now. I love sport and enjoy going for scenic runs around Stockholm, being outdoors and traveling. My creative side likes to dance, paint and decorate. And I’m gonna go ahead and call brunching a favourite ‘hobby’ of mine.

Meet the team: Elina, CTO & Cofounder

Where are you from?

Malmö, Sweden

Tell us about your work at Natural Cycles?

I am the CTO and co-founder of Natural Cycles. My work is very diverse, which I love. For instance, I get to look at a lot of data from our Cyclers and get deeper understanding on how the woman’s body works. I have also developed the algorithm behind Natural Cycles and with more and more data from you Cyclers, I sometimes get to optimize it to make it even better and more precise for each unique cycle.

Why Natural Cycles?

Well, I founded Natural Cycles together with Raoul since we personally needed a reliable natural contraceptive method and there was no such thing on the market. Later on we also decided to use Natural Cycles to carefully plan having our daughter, Alba.

Your favourite project at NC?

Well, the app is the best of course 🙂

What does it mean to be a good CTO & Cofounder

That we really care about the women using our app.

What’s one thing you’ve learned during your time at Natural Cycles?

Oh, so so much. Initially, my career started in the science world as a particle physicist, so I have learned so much during my Natural Cycles journey over the past 4 years. About women’s reproductive health, how to run a tech startup, how to develop apps and websites, and so much more.

What’s your go-to place to eat in Stockholm?

Eat? I have a company and a 2 year old daughter, I don’t get to go out and eat usually 🙂

Favourite feature in the Natural Cycles app?

I like the way the algorithm loads now, it says different things like “calculating” or “crunching the numbers” instead of just a boring loader. Then the colors emerge gradually. I love that feature.

Favourite song?

It changes with time, but right now: Héroes Del Silencio – Apuesta Por El Rock ´n´ Roll

Favourite quote?

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” – Les Brown

Tell us about your hobbies?

Natural Cycles is my hobby, which I get to share with my husband, so I’m very lucky.

Look out for more meet the team posts and here are the latest ones:

Have a lovely evening!

Meet the Natural Cycles Team: Olle, the Data Scientist

Last month you got to know our Customer Support Manager Rebecca, and this month you can learn more about our data scientist – Olle!

img_0144

Where are you from? I’m from Stockholm!

Tell us about your work at Natural Cycles?

It’s my job to analyse our user’s data, which enables the company to contribute to scientific research in fertility and contraception. The science aspect is important not only for us to correctly estimate the efficiency of Natural Cycles, but also to provide our customers with as accurate information about the product as we possibly can. My work is all about squeezing as much interesting stuff out of the data, which the users have logged in the app, as I can!

img_0146

Favourite project?

Every time I have a new set of data to look at! That first process of scanning through it, trying to visualise what possible relations and correlations could be hiding within these numbers, and then going on to developing some initial hypotheses and methods to test them. This process is extremely fun and rewarding – more people should try it.

What does it mean to be a good data scientist?

I think the most important thing is to have a curious and open mindset – to always want to take things apart and understand how and why things are connected. It’s important to be good at combining attention to detail with an understanding of the big picture. Great data scientists really enjoy problem solving and are constantly looking for the next big question to ask!

What’s one thing you’ve learned during your time at Natural Cycles?

That things as simple as body temperature measurements – can hide so much more interesting science than you can ever imagine!

What’s your go-to place to eat in Stockholm?

Depending on my mood either B.A.R on Blasieholmen, or Peppar at St. Eriksplan.

Favourite feature in the Natural Cycles app?

The graph!

Favourite quote?
“Your theory is crazy, but not crazy enough to be true” – Niels Bohr.

Tell us about your hobbies? I play football in the lowest Swedish tier and staying true to my nerdy profession, I also enjoy playing board games and watching a good Sci-Fi movie.

Stay tuned for more meet the team posts!

Cheers,

Dani at NC

Meet the team: Rebecca, Customer Support Manager

We’re continuing with our meet the team posts – so you get to know who’s behind the scenes. Natural Cycles is a young startup that has a diverse, international and young team working on giving women an alternative  and ensuring to deliver the best possible product we can. This week our customer support agent is up – Rebecca!

Natural Cycles Meet the Team

First snow in Stockholm!

Tell us about your work at Natural Cycles?
I work with customer support, so I answer all of our Cycler’s questions be it by email or on social media and the occasional phone call.  It’s also a part of my job to be involved in finding things that could do with improvement within the app, reporting bugs etc. I work very close with Cyclers and have a good understanding of what they want and need.

Why Natural Cycles?
I started using it myself as I had already quit the pill about six months earlier. About a year later, I was looking for a new job and found an open position and just knew I HAD to work for Natural Cycles. I was already happy with the app, and the work the company was doing, so I really wanted to be a part of this. I was actually really nervous and excited to meet Elina for the first time too!

What does it mean to be a good support agent?
I am very compassionate and well-informed about all aspects of the menstrual cycle. I always try to put myself in the position of being the Cycler, asking for guidance and help with my menstrual cycle and sex life. It means having to be very personal with everyone, while still providing all the relevant information. I really feel and sympathise with all them and try to give the best advice possible.

What’s one thing you’ve learned during your time at Natural Cycles?
Almost everything about the menstrual cycle!

What’s your go-to place to eat in Stockholm?
A burger place South of Stockholm, Bun-Meat-Bun. I’ve always treated myself to their burgers after every big thing in my life – surgery, new apartment and this job too actually!

Favourite feature in Natural Cycles app?
The graph is my favourite. It tells me everything I need to know about my own body. It shows the entire menstrual cycle, with every up and down in temperature and cycle variation, and all data is accessible by tapping the data point. Alternatively you can see it all on the statistics page. I’m just really interested in learning more about my body and cycle.

Favourite quote?
Always treat others as you wish for them to treat you. This speaks to me on so many levels – it was my school’s motto which has stuck with me since I was 6 years old.

Where are you from:

Born in Sundsvall, in the middle of Sweden. Resident of Stockholm since the late 90’s

Working at Natural Cycles Since: Last spring.

Thinking behind Natural Cycles’ new look:

Our Cyclers are independent, modern and vibrant women, which is what we wanted our new visual identity to represent.  We are therefore moving away from our old white and purple look towards a more colourful, warm and bold identity.

New apps features and design:

We are changing everything and nothing. While our cyclers will recognize and feel right at home with most features this will be a major update of our app. Expect a better user experience in total. More intuitive, more beautiful and more focused. Every cycler, seasoned and novice, will hopefully find, not only the app, but the entire process easier to understand and use.

Release date:

We are rolling out our new visual identity this autumn and at the end of the year we finish of with the release of the redesigned application.

Favourite new icon:

From the new app? The calendar icon for sure. A very very clean and simple shape yet unique.

Meet our new colleagues!

It is Tuesday and NaturalCycles is growing fast as we have two new colleagues in the house! I’d like to introduce myself, Danijela, and Eliza the new communication manager, who Elina briefly introduced last week. Eliza will be spreading the word about NaturalCycles overseas and I thought you would like to get to know her a bit better.

Where are you from Eliza?
I’m from West London. For all you thinking about visiting, remember, West is Best!

How has this week been at NaturalCycles?
It’s been busy. But busy is good!  Lots of exciting things are going on at the NaturalCycles HQ and I am super happy to be a part of it!

What’s the most exciting part of your work? What are you looking forward?
I love creative writing. It allows me to get into the mind of the reader and challenge myself to write according to what they want to see. I write for my friends – if they enjoy can it then I think anyone can!

I’m looking forward to a NaturalCycles double page spread in all your favourite glossies!

Eliza!
